ABICE PLUMBING PROGRAMME
COURSE OUTLINE
Course Description:
Plumbing is a two -year programme of study that helps students to develop the knowledge and skills in handling the tools, materials and equipment through a process of maintaining the plumbing and sanitary system. Course safety is reinforced continually throughout the course sequence. Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business Ethics, Communication and Occupational Math are integrated throughout the curriculum. Additionally, the knowledge and skills of plumbing and pipefitting by working individually, in pairs or small groups just as they would in real work situations. They will also perform hands-on assembly, maintenance and testing traps. Students will complete a four-month Job Training Exercise in year two.
Course Objective:
- install and maintain all plumbing systems, including hot liquid heating, water supply, and water treatment.
- fabricate and install any of the pipe systems used for various purposes in buildings, using any type of pipe: steel, copper, plastic, etc.
- provide safe and efficient systems which function well in conjunction with other systems
- know the rules and codes governing installations
- read and interpret plans and specifications and prepare layouts and working drawings
- be proficient with the safe use of hand tools and equipment
- calculate material quantities
- detail components and fixtures according to specifications and assume responsibility for the end product
- relate to job situations and other trades that precede or follow
- perform assigned tasks in accordance with quality and production standards required by industry
Course Requirements:
Students enrolled in Plumbing will be required to become familiar with the proper use and care of plumbing tools and equipment. The students will become aware of safety practices and accident prevention in accordance with CARICOM standards. The student will also become familiar with measurement, layout procedures and the materials used in this field. Occupational requirements are met through project-based learning combined with the necessary theory and employability skills. Course activities and projects required for successful completion of the programme include ongoing assessment, portfolio development, and final assessments.
N.B Students in this program are eligible to receive industry recognized certification from the Antigua and Barbuda National Training Agency (ABNTA) upon successful completion of the course along with an ABICE TVET Certificate.
